Aadi Krithigai: Multiplying Your Prayers

Om Saravana Bhava!

In the spiritual rhythm of the Tamil calendar, the month of Aadi (July-August) holds a special vibration. It is a month dedicated to the power of Shakti (divine energy). When this auspicious month aligns with the Krithigai star—the birth star of Lord Murugan—it creates a powerful vortex for prayer and realization known as Aadi Krithigai.

In 2026, we observe Aadi Krithigai on Friday, August 7th. It is widely believed that worship offered on this specific day yields manifold returns, multiplying the blessings of health, wealth, and wisdom.

The Legend: Honoring the Divine Mothers

While Vaikasi Visakam celebrates the birth of Murugan, Aadi Krithigai celebrates his foster mothers. When Lord Murugan was born as six divine sparks, he was cared for by six celestial maidens known as the Karthigai Pengal.

Moved by their devotion and care for her son, Goddess Parvati merged the six babies into one but blessed the six maidens to become the constellation Krittika (Pleiades). Lord Shiva granted a boon that anyone who worships Lord Murugan on Krithigai days will have their wishes fulfilled. Therefore, Aadi Krithigai is a day of gratitude and a day to seek the favor of the Lord through love.

Why “Multiplying” Prayers?

There is a Tamil saying, “Aadi Pattam Thedi Vithai” (Sow your seeds in the month of Aadi). While this refers to agriculture, it applies spiritually as well. The act of devotion, charity (Annadhanam), and penance performed during this time grows exponentially. It is the perfect time to:

  • Start new spiritual practices.
  • Pray for the resolution of long-standing debts or illnesses.
  • Perform acts of selfless service.

Celebrations at Texas Murugan Temple

Aadi Krithigai is famous for the majestic Pookavadi (Flower Kavadi). Unlike the piercing rituals of Thaipoosam, Aadi is often celebrated with Kavadis adorned with colorful flowers, symbolizing the blossoming of the soul.
